When we decide to give our lives to Christ, we embrace our trust in Jesus as the Savior of the world. We earnestly desire to be Christ’s friend; to know and be known by God. We want to follow Christ.
Until it’s not that easy. It doesn’t seem so simple when we are ostracized for following Him instead of our culture. Until we realize that maybe we have to choose between things we love and those Christ loves.
We know we aren’t drawing closer to God and deliberately following Christ when our pursuit of wealth, fame, personal advancement has given us status with our neighbors but we have not noticed the needy in our own backyards.
We have been given life—in order to give our own life away. We choose daily what and Who to follow. Make no mistake: everyone follows something or someone. So many things call to us, and it can be confusing to discern what is of God and what isn’t.
Take time to prayerfully explore your interactions and motivations. Ask God to reveal His presence so that you can follow God wholeheartedly. Immerse yourself in Scripture so that you can recognize God’s voice.
“What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?”
Prayer: Holy God, thank you for drawing me to You. Teach me to follow You passionately and wholeheartedly. Empower me with strength from the Holy Spirit to accept the sacrifice and pursue you more closely. In Jesus Name, Amen .
Questions for Reflection:
- What are things that hold you back from following Christ wholeheartedly?
- Where is the Holy Spirit calling you to go?
- What action will you take today to follow Jesus more closely?
