[#pictureLent] March 12: BELIEVE

First, read John 3:1-17 (Psalm 32; 121)

We see the word believe a lot. It’s kind of like the word love, it can be overused. For me it sounds magical, like a Christmas word when you’re told to believe in Santa and the magic and the mystery of him. So sometimes when I hear it associated with God it sounds like something to do with my imagination. This led me to look up the actual definition. To believe means to feel sure of the truth of something. To trust and have confidence.

Our lives are full of unknowns and things that don’t make sense, yet we try to understand them and define them somehow, don’t we? My husband and I have been married for almost twenty years and we have had many health and financial struggles that have challenged our faith. In those moments we have definitely had our “why, God, why” moments. We found ourselves needing a reason in order to make sense of it and move forward. A lot of times this left us stuck though. We’d pray specific prayers that weren’t answered the way we thought they would be and we would feel discouraged. When you get in that place, it’s easy to blame God.

Believing in God is believing in God’s goodness. Trusting God. Jesus came to to help and put the world right again. Jesus came for me and he came for you, to put our lives and our hearts right again. God is with you, right where you are, giving you strength. Helping your eyes to see and your ears to hear the way Jesus sees and hears things, with full confidence that God knows what needs to be done.

Through all the things my husband and I have had to go through, I can tell you, I’m thankful for all of them. I wasn’t always thankful for them at the time. Each situation has formed me more into God’s image because I let them. After all my questions, doubt, and struggles, I continued to believe (know the truth; trust; have confidence in) God.

Discussion/Reflection Questions:

1. When was a time you believed God for something specific and it didn’t work out that way?  How did you handle that?
2. What can you do to believe God right now for something in your life and rest in God’s goodness?
